Chapter Seventeen

Dohlan’s body turns to stone. One trapped on an unstable, jittery surface. Jerking as if he needs to go wreak havoc as Dreya suggested, but he’s fighting against the inclination.

Marrouske steps an inch into my peripheral view. “I thought we had an agreement, Lord Marsoun.”

Did she and Bree finish what they needed to do? Does Aunt Meira, Madame Marrouske, have any magic left with which to fight? Or did she just give it all away.

And…

Where’s Bree?

Behind us, the trees and breeze whisper for only me to hear about a new master sage in the making. About Bree.

Dohlan’s jaw tightens and nostrils flare, a scowl cutting across his lips. “If you recall,” he says in reply to Meira. “It was your people who brought me here.” He doesn’t turn to look at the mystic, but keeps his attention glued to Dreya.

“An agreement?” Dreya’s brow arches. “Without consulting me?” She flashes him a you’ve-been-bad frown. “We will have to make adjustments to your chains.” Dohlan snarls.

I gasp. Against my internal temperature conflict, or the new knowledge of Dohlan’s state, I’m not sure.

Edea’s words whisper as a reminder in my thoughts. “…free my son from Dreya’s control.”

I never wanted to follow through on a request more than right now. No one deserves to be chained. Not like that. Not to the will of another.

“Now go do as I say.” Dreya waves a dismissive hand to the fighting at her back. “Kill them.”

His body shudders, and with tremulous motions, he turns to leave, his legs moving like lead. But even as he is following through on Dreya’s order, the strain on his face, the twitch of his lip, speak of a Fae fighting her control with every one of his breaths. His hands roll into tight fists, and he pulls to a stop. A puppy fighting against a hurricane.

His gaze finds me, sharp and intense. “The ring?”

My body jolts, my hand reflexively grabbing for the circle of gold hanging at my neck.

“Use it.” His words are rough, choked in his throat.

He turns away, his gaze swings past Dreya as he resumes his walk toward the fight, toward the given command to kill. But his steps are short, clearly still fighting the order.

Dreya’s face turns fury red. And if her gaze could burn, Dohlan would already be ash.

With a slight tilt of his head, he yells over his shoulder. “You have to wear it.”

Dreya laughs. “His words are nothing more than his attempt to put a ring on you. He so likes to toy with the young and naïve.”

I don’t listen. Instead, I tug at the string holding the ring, my fingers fumbling what should be an easy task.

“Let me help you.” Jaden grabs the string, turning it to find the back. The latch or tie. I can no longer remember how I put the darn thing on.

Without a word, Raundel reaches in and breaks the string, sending the ring tumbling free into my flailing hands. I attempt to line the ring up, slip it on, but I’m shaking.
